Happy Friday book lovers! We’re back with another First Lines Friday, a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines? Here are the rules:
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

First lines:
“They burned down the market the day Vivek Oji died.”

Do you recognize the book these first lines come from?

*drumroll please!*

What does it mean for a family to lose a child they never really knew?
One afternoon, in a town in southeastern Nigeria, a mother opens her front door to discover her son’s body, wrapped in colorful fabric, at her feet. What follows is the tumultuous, heart-wrenching story of one family’s struggle to understand a child whose spirit is both gentle and mysterious. Raised by a distant father and an understanding but overprotective mother, Vivek suffers disorienting blackouts, moments of disconnection between self and surroundings. As adolescence gives way to adulthood, Vivek finds solace in friendships with the warm, boisterous daughters of the Nigerwives, foreign-born women married to Nigerian men. But Vivek’s closest bond is with Osita, the worldly, high-spirited cousin whose teasing confidence masks a guarded private life. As their relationship deepens—and Osita struggles to understand Vivek’s escalating crisis—the mystery gives way to a heart-stopping act of violence in a moment of exhilarating freedom.
Propulsively readable, teeming with unforgettable characters, The Death of Vivek Oji is a novel of family and friendship that challenges expectations—a dramatic story of loss and transcendence that will move every reader.
Okay, so the inclusion of part of the title in the opening does kind of give it away, but The Death of Vivek Oji has popped up on my bookstagram feed and GR TL a few times over the last week, and all the reviews I’ve seen have been really positive. When I saw it on NetGalley today as a “Read Now” option, I took it as a sign and went for it!

Have you read The Death of Vivek Oji or is it on your TBR?

Thanks for the heads up! I just got it on Netgalley!

I didn’t hear of it until I went to bookstagram and saw it multiple times on my TL. It does sound good and I’m hoping that the story continues to pull me in after that opening!
