Hello Mondays, welcome back to #5OnMyTBR, a meme created by the wonderful E @ The Local Bee Hunter’s Nook. This bookish meme gets us to dig even further into our TBRs by simply posting about five books on our TBR! You can learn more about it here or in the post announcing it. This week’s prompt is: Long.

I think I like long books and I cannot lie! …Well, I mean, I might be lying a little. I don’t know.

I know that I like the look of them and I also like the idea of challenging myself to read them because who doesn’t like the thought of holding up a big book and saying ‘yes, I have read this big boi’?! But when it comes down to actually getting these books read, it’s a whole different story and I often find that I’m too intimidated to pick them up. I remember the sheer horror of picking up my physical copy of The Priory of the Orange Tree when buddy reading it last year and thinking “WHY ON EARTH WOULD YOU DO THIS TO YOURSELF?!” It was a moment of sheer panic with me believing I’d never make it through (how dramatic am I?!). Well, that obviously didn’t last and I can now proudly say that I read that bad boi and it wasn’t actually that painful.

But sitting at a whopping 848 pages, it actually isn’t even close to being the longest book on my TBR! Below I list the top five longest books waiting to be read on my physical shelf:

    • I’ve had it on my TBR for years and years now and I don’t know when (if ever) I’ll get around to it because yeah, every time I look at it I get overwhelmed by the thought of reading it 😂 The big books are defo intimidating! Haha

    • Definitely agree with you! I like the short and mid-length books for ‘regular’ reading but sometimes it’s nice to venture out of that box. Especially when you discover a gem that doesn’t read like the endless million pages that it is lol I hope KoA is one of those books that read faster than it is long 😉

  5. We had to read «War and Peace» at school and I was probably the only person in my class (maybe even the whole school 😀 ) to read it. I admit that I skipped a couple of chapters here and there, mostly war related ones. But I did read most of it. If only I’d remember it now… Lol

    I’m not even going to attempt The Count of Monte Cristo. My mom always says that she loved this book when she was younger. Somehow, it’s even scarier to me than War and Peace. 😀

    And OMG! I read Kingdom of Ash two years ago. It reads so quickly. You’d never think that it’s actually almost 1000 pages long.

    • Haha I’m impressed! War and Peace is a chunky beast (it’s right next to me on my shelf right now and I’m side-eyeing it –or maybe it’s side-eyeing me! 🤣) but also I didn’t think I’d be keen for Monte Cristo but I read the manga earlier this year and I was like Ooh, YAS! I wonder if it’ll make a difference in my reading since I already “know” the story 🤔
      I think with KoA it’s less that I’m intimidated by the length but more that I don’t want the series to end? Lol But also it’s been so long since I read the previous books that I have ZERO recollection about what’s happened 🤣 Bahaha did you enjoy KoA?

      • I think I did 😀 I don’t remember hating it, so I might have like it? Ahaha. I remember reading this series back to back and kinda taking it very chill, not reviewing or anything, just reading for enjoynment. 😀

    • Haha I actually haven’t seen the book’s physical form yet but I do have it on my Kindle. I’m kind of glad that I haven’t seen the physical book of it coz otherwise I might get too intimidated as well. Especially coz like you, classics always take me ages to read as well! I hope we both end up enjoying it though ❤

  11. I think one of my favorite LONG books is Kushiel’s Dart by Jacqueline Carey (iirc it’s just over 1000 pages haha). For the most part I like quicker reads but every once in a while a tome can be nice. 🙂

  14. Ah, Priory. I wondered if that would be mentioned. I’m pretty sure that buddy read scarred part of the group for life. xD I still need to read The Way of Kings and Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell, too, so I’m right there with you.

  15. Big books can be so intimidating, but I don’t actively avoid reading big books. I’ve just checked and this year I’ve read a few close to 600 pages. I’ve only read one higher than that around 800 pages. 😳
    I absolutely love Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrel but it could be shorter and it took me a while to get into it. I hope you read it someday! I’ve also read years ago War and Peace, I remember it took me a while to finish it, and The Count of Monte Cristo that I really enjoyed.
    The biggest book I read this year was House of Earth and Blood by Sarah J Maas with 803 pages. I don’t think you read it but I’m not sure. Anyway, if you haven’t I’d recommend it! I think you’ll love it. 🙂
