#5OnMyTBR: Hyped from the Past

Hello Mondays, welcome back to #5OnMyTBR, a meme created by the wonderful E @ The Local Bee Hunter’s Nook. This bookish meme gets us to dig even further into our TBRs by simply posting about five books on our TBR! You can learn more about it here or in the post announcing it. You can find the full list of prompts (past and future) at the end of this post!

This week’s prompt is: Hyped from the past.

I gotta be honest, the majority of books on my shelves are bought because of the hype. I also haven’t read… very many of these titles so it’s just a matter of picking a few from the endless piles to share for today’s list 😂 I’ve decided to look at books before 2019, which wasn’t all that difficult because although these books were released before then, they all received a lot of hype last year! Or maybe it’s just because I finally made it into the book community so I finally started to hear about the hype? Who knows! But I digress… Let’s get to it!

Oh Outlander… You chunky thing, you. I’m so intimidated by this book/series because not only are they thick bois but the series is pretty long! I haven’t even watched the series yet because I want to read the books first but welp, who knows when that’s going to happen! 🙈

I’ve heard so much about The Raven Boys series and about Stiefvater as well. I know it’s well loved but I had never heard of it before last year… I love the cover though and I’m looking forward to it!

Red Rising is another series that I saw get a lot of love last year because the next book in the series was published. There’s something about this book that intimidates me and that’s why I haven’t picked it up. It’s one I talk about a lot in these lists though 😂

This book… I don’t think I’ve heard one bad review about The Poppy War? I mean, that I can recall off the top of my head. Everyone who has read this seems to have loved it so much! I feel like I should bump it up my to-read list but I’m also worried I won’t love it as much…

All of John Green’s books are madly hyped but I feel like Looking for Alaska received a lot of attention last year (was it because the show/movie released?). I’ve only read TFIOS and I loved it so much, I’m hoping I feel the same about his other books!

  1. I just finished Red Rising and liked it.. just know that it is DARK! Also, Outlander is sooo good!!! What I do is read the books along with the show! I usually start off the book a week or two before the season starts. They typically run about 100 pages her episode. So, I would read 100 pages of the book and then watch an episode. Then, I would read another 100 pages until the following weeks episode. I felt like it really helped me not feel so intimidated by the size! It’s been working well so far. Except that I’m a season behind. haha

  2. I love the idea of this meme (yes… I’m probably living under a rock in my back yard for not having known about it until now). Most of these are on my TBR too and some of them I’ve gotten out from the library but STILL haven’t read them – looking at you Raven Boys and The Poppy War. I’ve read Looking For Alaska and was really disappointed by it. Hopefully you enjoy it more than I did 🙂 Great post Dini

  3. It took me forever to finally pick up Outlander, but I’m so happy I did. I’ve only made it through book five, which is past where the show is. I love them both! And The Raven Boys is in my top five favorite series. Read it!! I recently got rid of Red Rising without reading it. It sat on my shelf for years, but I’d lost interest. And I loved Looking for Alaska! I think if you liked TFIOS, you’ll like it, too. ❤

  4. The only one of these I haven’t read is Looking for Alaska – I LOVED the others. So might be working checking out at some point. But also I had to laugh because I have the SAME problem with my TBR.

  5. I still need to read The Poppy War and Looking for Alaska. I loved (although this isn’t the right word considering all that takes place in the book) Outlander, but I really struggled getting into the second book. I didn’t enjoy Red Rising as much as I hoped, but there was a little something there, so I may end up picking up the second book at some point? I really enjoyed the whole Raven Boys series.
