I first discovered this post on BookLoversBlog on NYE and decided it was the perfect way to wrap up my reading and blogging year. The survey was originally created by Jamie @ The Perpetual Page Turner and asks us questions that reflect the last year of books, reading and blogging. I was wondering how I would do my yearly wrap up and I’m so glad I stumbled across this survey because it’s not only fun but also covers all the bookish and blogging bases. I’ve decided to split up the survey into three posts though because it’s quite long and I want to answer all the questions! Part I will cover my 2019 Stats and Best in Books, Part II will be about my Blogging/Bookish Life, and Part III will be about Looking Ahead in 2020.

1. Best book read in 2019?

I really don’t think I can pick one best out of 200+ reads… It’s already difficult enough picking 30, 20 or 10 lol so I’m going to leave you links to my Top 30 and Top 10 books! 😬

2. Book you were excited about & thought you were going to love more but didn’t?

Red, White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuiston. That’s not to say I didn’t enjoy it but I didn’t love it as much as everyone else seemed to, which was disappointing 😔

3. Most surprising (in a good or bad way) book you read?

The Grace Year by Kim Liggett and it was definitely a good kind of surprising!

4. Book you “pushed” the most people to read (and they did)?

This might be Pumpkinheads by Rainbow Rowell and Faith Erin Hicks. I loved the cutesy, feel-good autumn vibes from this graphic novel and people actually listened to me and picked it up (and enjoyed it too)!

5. Best series you started in 2019? Best sequel of 2019? Best series ender of 2019?

Started: Nevernight by Jay Kristoff
Sequel: The Bride Test by Helen Hoang (this totally counts as a sequel since it’s #2 in The Kiss Quotient series, right?!)
Ender: The Queen of Nothing by Holly Black

6. Favorite new author you discovered in 2019?

This is a toughie! I’ve discovered so many amazing new authors but I think I’ll have to go with either Taylor Jenkins Reid and Mariana Zapata. I can’t just choose one (didn’t I arleady mention I suck at choosing?)! I have loved both of these authors and have read quite a few of their books this year (especially Zapata). TJR is the queen of making me emotional and Zapata is the queen of slow burns! 👑

7. Best book from a genre you don’t typically read/was out of your comfort zone?

Rules for Vanishing by Kate Alice Marshall is so far outside of my comfort zone but wow, did I enjoy this creepy AF right or what?!

8. Most action packed/thrilling/unputdownable book of the year?

This definitely goes to Nevernight by Jay Kristoff! It was slightly confusing to start but once I picked up the audiobook, I did not want to leave this crazy ass book for one second!

9. Book you read in 2019 that you would be most likely to re-read next year?

The Bear and The Nightingale by Katherine Arden. Mostly because I still haven’t written my review for it and I’ve forgotten a lot of it but I did love it and I want to continue the series now that I’ve got all the books waiting for me 🙂

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2019?

Aurora Rising by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff. I just can’t not love this cover. Charlie Bowater is probably my favourite artist as her work is always absolutely stunning! 😍

11. Most memorable character of 2019?

I’m going for two characters as they’re from the same book and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about them: Connell and Marianne from Normal People by Sally Rooney.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2019?

This is tough! I think this would be Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens because her writing really is beautiful.

13. Most thought provoking/life-changing read in 2019?

Sorry I’m Late I Didn’t Want to Come by Jessica Pan. I’m actually quite similar to Pan in many ways so this book really made me think about my own life and how I live it. I could probably stand to challenge myself and step out of my comfort zone more often because who knows when it’ll be worth it. Even if isn’t, I’ll still have grown in some way from it. So much of what Pan experienced I’ve gone through too, so it was really comforting and thought-provoking!

14. Book you can’t believe you WAITED until 2019 to finally read?

The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. I read two of her books this year and I honestly can’t believe I put off reading both until 2019. They left me hot hot hot messes 😅

15. Favorite passage/quote from a book you read in 2019?

I don’t really keep track of favourite quotes/passages from books but this is the first one that came to mind. It’s from Maybe In Another Life by Taylor Jenkins Reid.

“I was really taken with this one theory that states that everything that is possible happens. That means that when you flip a quarter, it doesn’t come down heads or tails. It comes up heads and tails. Every time you flip a coin and it comes up heads, you are merely in the universe where the coin came up heads. There is another version of you out there, created the second the quarter flipped, who saw it come up tails. This is happening every second of every day. The world is splitting further and further into an infinite number of parallel universes where everything that could happen is happening. This is completely plausible, by the way. It’s a legitimate interpretation of quantum mechanics. It’s entirely possible that every time we make a decision, there is a version of us out there somewhere who made a different choice. 16. Shortest and longest book you read in 2019?

24 pages – Fence (Issue 01) by C.S. Pacat
848 pages – Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon

17. Book that shocked you the most?

Verity by Colleen Hoover. Oh buddy, this book had me shook and pulled me straight up out of the worst reading slump I’ve been in this year. It was fantastic!

18. OTP of the year? (you will go down with this ship!)

Calla and Jonah from The Simple Wild by K.A. Tucker. These two gave me ALL THE FEELS!

19. Favorite non-romantic relationship of the year?

Nathaniel and Silas from Sorcery of Thorns by Margaret Rogerson. I absolutely loved their relationship!

20. Favorite book you read in 2019 from an author you’ve read previously?

Vicious by V.E. Schwab was incredible! Her adult fantasy/scifi was just as great as her YA fantasy/scifi!

21. Best Book You Read In 2019 That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else/Peer Pressure/Bookstagram, Etc.?

Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner. Worth it!

22. Newest fictional crush from a book you read in 2019?

I HAVE TO CHOOSE JUST ONE? Okay… I’m going to choose Tric from The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff 😏

23. Best 2019 debut you read?

Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Gwendy Vanderah

24. Best worldbuilding/most vivid setting you read this year?

The Nevernight Chronicle by Jay Kristoff. Such insane settings and incredible world building (even through footnotes)!

25. Book that put a smile on your face/was the most FUN to read?

Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren

26. Book that made you cry or nearly cry in 2019?

I’m such a crier that I actually have tons to choose from but I think I cried the ugliest reading The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah! I’m talking about really hard and really ugly crying here 😅

27. Hidden gem of the year?

Where the Forest Meets the Stars by Gwendy Vanderah. This was such a beautifully written and magical book about love, forgiveness, family and new beginnings.

28. Book that crushed your soul?

There were a few soul crushing reads this year… But I think the winner goes to Nevernight by Jay Kristoff. If you can’t tell, this book really won a lot of 2019.

29. Book that made you the most mad (doesn’t necessarily mean you didn’t like it)?

Hot Dog Girl by Jennifer E. Dugan. This book made me so mad! How can such a cute cover have such a disappointing story?! I mean… SMDH. Sooo disappointing!

30. Best audiobook narrator?

Well, this is going to sound redundant now with the number of times I’ve mentioned this series already in this post, but Holter Graham, who narrated The Nevernight Chronicle, is pretty freaking amazing! I’m super picky with my narrators because I easily get distracted and bored but Graham’s narration had me hooked from the first. I loved the voices that he did for all the characters and now I can’t read the book without hearing his voice in my head 🙂 Iconic.
